Joint Pain & Autoimmune Diseases

When joint pain is more than ‘wear and tear’ — the specialist evaluation that makes the difference.

Overview

Persistent joint pain, unexplained fatigue, morning stiffness or multi-system symptoms often signal an underlying autoimmune process. A structured rheumatology work-up identifies the specific condition — from spondyloarthritis to Sjögren's, vasculitis or undifferentiated connective tissue disease — and opens the door to targeted, effective treatment.

Symptoms

  • Joint pain lasting more than six weeks
  • Morning stiffness of more than 30 minutes
  • Multiple joints affected symmetrically
  • Fatigue, low-grade fever or unexplained weight loss
  • Dry eyes and mouth, skin rashes or Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Causes

    • Autoimmune conditions such as RA, Lupus, Sjögren's and Vasculitis
    • Spondyloarthritis (Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis)
    • Post-infectious reactive arthritis
    • Overlap syndromes

    Diagnosis

  • Detailed history and full joint examination
  • Complete autoimmune panel (ANA, ENA, ANCA, RF, anti-CCP)
  • Inflammatory markers and complement levels
  • Imaging — ultrasound, X-ray, MRI as required
  • Multidisciplinary referral when other organs are involved
  • Treatment Options

    • Condition-specific DMARDs and biologics
    • Targeted physiotherapy and pain-management strategies
    • Coordinated care with cardiology, nephrology or dermatology as needed
    • Ongoing monitoring for treatment response and side effects

    Lifestyle Advice

  • Do not ignore persistent joint symptoms — early evaluation is critical
  • Keep a symptom diary to help your rheumatologist
  • Stay active within your comfort range
  • Prioritise sleep, nutrition and mental well-being
  • Attend every follow-up — autoimmune disease evolves over time
